Killy's Addiction
I am addicted to the news. This is not a healthy addiction (as if any addiction is healthy), considering the current state of the world and my tendency toward ineffectual rage. I'm not going to go into any of my specific feelings on global warming, gay marriage, domestic wire-tapping, minimum wage, the estate tax, the ever-worsening situation in Iraq, and the more recent explosion of violence in the Middle East. I could write on ad nauseum about these sundry political hot topics, but I have neither the time nor the fortitude to do so at this juncture, and I'm pretty sure most of you can figure out where I stand on these issues anyway.
I now spend most of my down time at work surfing the inexhaustible supply of news sources on the net. I try to read from sources that represent the various sides of the political spectrum, to increase my odds of gleaning something close to the truth. So, for example, for every article I read on commondreams.org, I read one on renewamerica.us. I read the Washington Post and the Washington Times.
I long ago came to the (painfully obvious) conclusion that there is no such thing as an unbiased news source. I have more recently concluded that pretty much everyone thinks that their political views are underrepresented in the mainstream media. And you know what? They're probably all right.* The mainstream media doesn't really represent the interests of anyone but the mainstream media. The news that sells more papers and sucks in more viewers is the news that gets the most coverage. God bless capitalism!
See? I lost control again. I can't not bitch! I should just play solitaire and surf Myspace at work like a normal person.
*This does not mean that agree with Ann Coulter in any way, shape, or form.
