Taxation Frustration
I would like to state for the record that filing part-year-resident tax returns is a big fat bitch. Don't move from state to state if you can avoid it. And if you can't avoid it, move on January 1st, thereby eliminating the need to pay taxes for 1 year in 2 states.
DC's wasn't actually that bad. Part-year residents file the same form that regular residents file (D-40), they just have to do a few more calculations and fill out a few extra lines. It's all outlined in a pretty straightforward manner.
Virginia makes its part-year residents file a completely different form (760-PY), which comes with a 30-something-page instruction manual that throws around page, section, and line numbers (and don't forget letters!) until your head is spinning around Exorcist-style. I'll just add this to the list of Reasons Why No Earthly Power Could Make Me Move Back to Virginia.
